The correct option is B Both the assertion and the reason are correct but, the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
Aluminium foil was not used in the α-scattering experiment since gold is more malleable than aluminium. Gold foil can be stretched until it is only a few atoms thick in places, which is not possible with aluminum. The experiment was conducted to prove that most of the particles pass undeflected and a few change paths. If the foil were too thick, there would be no transmission of particles.

Hence, the assertion and the reason are correct but the reason is not the correct explanation for the assertion.
