Solution

The correct option is B

Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.

The explanation for the Correct option B):

  1. Assertion statement:
  1. With the exception of noble gases, most elements' atoms do not exist in a free state due to the arrangement of their electrons. It is unstable if an atom's outermost shell does not complete an octet.
  2. In order to reach the electrical configuration of the nearest inert gas, atoms will tend to gain or lose electrons. As a result, atoms only exist in two forms: molecules and ions.
  3. When atoms gain or lose electrons to achieve the electronic configuration of the nearest inert gas, ions are created. As a result, ions have higher stability than atoms.
  4. Eg-Sodium (Na) has an electronic configuration: 2,8,1. It becomes Na+ ion after losing one electron and gains stability by achieving the completely filled valence shell.

2. Reason statement:

  1. A charged atom or molecule is known as an ion. It is charged because the number of electrons in the atom or molecule does not equal the number of protons.
  2. Depending on whether the number of electrons in an atom is greater or less than the number of protons in the atom, an atom can acquire a positive or negative charge.

3. Hence, Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.

The explanation for the incorrect option:

A) An ion is more stable than an atom because ions achieve a stable and completely filled electronic configuration and not because an ion is a charged particle. Thus, Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.

C) A is true but R is also true as ions are charged particles.

D) A is true as ions are more stable than an atom.

The correct option is B)- Both A and R are true, but R is not the correct explanation of A.
