Question

Assertion :A catalyst does not alter the equilibrium constant of the reaction. Reason: The catalyst forms a complex with the reactants and provides an alternate path with the lower energy of activation for the reaction; the forward and backward reactions are affected to the same extent.

Solution

The correct option is A If both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
Equilibrium constant cannot be changed upon addition of catalyst as catalyst affects both forward and backward reactions to the same extent and hence don't alter the equilibrium constant. Rather it provides an alternative path wth lower activation energy to fasten the reaction.
SO both the assertion and reason are correct and is the correct explanation and answer is option A.
