The density of cork is much less then the density of water so if left in a glass of water then it will start floating on the surface. This happens because the buoyant force due to water is equal to the weight but if we immerse the cork even more then the force of buoyancy increases because the volume of cork in the water increases due to which the buoyancy increases. So a fork is needed to immerse it in.
