On 16 December, 1846, some of the sardars signed the Treaty of Bhairowal, but Rani Jindan did not sign the treaty. According to the treaty, the British army would stay at Lahore. A British Resident appointed by the Governor-General would stay in Lahore. A Council of Regency advised by the British Resident would be in charge of the administration of Lahore, since Maharaja Dalip Singh was still a minor. Maharani Jindan would no longer be associated with the Kingdom.
