A photodiode is a semiconductor device that converts light into current. The current is generated when photons are absorbed in the photodiode. For this purpose, a p-n junction is reverse biased. When small amount of light falls on it, due to sensitivity to voltage changes in reverse bias, there is sudden change in current detected.
