Solution

  1. Movement of water from its higher concentration to its lower concentration via a semi permeable membrane is called osmosis.
  2. It take place only in liquid medium. Solvent alone undergo diffusion across the semi permeable membrane.
  3. Rate of osmosis depends upon the concentration and type of solutes.
  4. There are three type of osmotic solutions:
  1. Hypotonic solution – a dilute solution with low osmotic concentration compared to another solution.
  2. Hypertonic solution – a concentrated solution with high osmotic concentration compared to other solutions.
  3. Isotonic solution —same osmotic concentration as that of another solution.

5. When plant cells are placed in hypotonic solution, they absorb water by osmosis and swells up and become turgid. This process is known as endosmosis.

6. If the concentration of water molecules in the cell is higher than the concentration of water molecules in surrounding medium, then the cell will shrink as the water leaves the cell. This is called exosmosis.

Assertion and reason is true but reason is not the correct explanation for assertion.
