Solution

The correct option is C Assertion is true but reason is false
The ecosystem is the functional unit of nature where the living organisms interact with each other and with the surrounding physical environment.

Ecosystem consists of biotic (plants, animals, microbes) and abiotic (sunlight, soil, temperature) components.

There is interaction between the biotic and abiotic components of the ecosystem, which is required for the sustenance of the ecosystem.

Plants (producers) absorb mineral nutrients from the soil for their growth and metabolism. These mineral nutrients are present in the soil due to the activity of the decomposers like bacteria and fungi.

The decomposers obtain nourishment from the dead and decaying organic matter. They secrete enzymes which cause the breakdown of the complex organic matter into simple inorganic nutrients. They absorb these nutrients for their survival and the remaining nutrients are added to the soil. These inorganic mineral nutrients present in the soil are absorbed by the plants for their growth and metabolism.

Consumers are the heterotrophic components of the ecosystem. They directly or indirectly depend on the producers for their nourishment. They do not derive nourishment from dead matter and are not responsible for the release of nutrients into the soil.

Hence, the assertion is true but the reason is false.
