The first printing press was introduced to India by the Portuguese in the year 1556. At the time, it was not being used for printing newspapers and mass media. It was not until the arrival of the British that it was a daily phenomena. The first Indian newspaper was published on 28 January 1780 by James Augustus Hickey. It was called the Bengal Gazette.
