Solution

The correct option is A Both A and R are true. R is the correct explanation of A.
The Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance or the Warsaw Pact was formed as a countermeasure to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). The Warsaw Pact was formed on May 14, 1955. It was a politico-military alliance created by the Soviet Union and its allies in Central and Eastern Europe. The Soviet Union dominated this organisation and used this pact to suppress popular dissent in its allies in Eastern Europe. By the late 1980s, political changes in most of the member states made the Pact virtually ineffectual. By 1990, many countries withdrew from the Warsaw Pact military exercises. It was officially disbanded post the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.
