There are lots of Intrauterine devices available in the market. Based on their makeup and mechanism of action, they are divided into three generations.
The first-generation (non-medicated) IUDs are Lippes loops, rings etc. Lippes loop does not allow the fertilisation. It increases the process of sperm phagocytosis as it attracts macrophages in the uterine cavity.
Second generation IUDs work on the basis of Copper release like CuT, Cu7, multiload 375 etc. Copper releasing IUDs have spermicidal properties as they increase the levels of prostaglandins and white blood cells within the uterus, thus causing phagocytosis of sperms.
The third generation is hormone-releasing IUDs like progestasert, LNG - 20 etc. The hormones released from these IUDs make the uterus unsuitable for the survival of sperms as well as for implantation.
