Solution

The correct option is D Both Assertion and Reason are incorrect
Destruction of adrenal cortex by diseases like tuberculosis produces Addison's disease, due to the deficiency of glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids which are secreted by the adrenal cortex region zone fasciculata and zona glomerulosa respectively. Symptoms of Addison's disease include a bronze-like pigmentation of the skin, low blood sugar, low plasma Na+, high plasma K+, increased urinary Na+, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Cortisol is a glucocorticoid which regulates the metabolisms of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. A tumour of the adrenal cortex may secret too much cortisol to produce Cushing's syndrome. High blood sugar, the appearance of sugar in the urine, obesity, wasting of limb muscles, rise in plasmaNa+, fall in plasma K+, a rise in blood volume and high blood pressure are observed in the patient suffering from Cushing's syndrome.
So the correct answer is 'Both Assertion and Reason are incorrect'.
