Changes in the velocity as well as acceleration are always continuous. For the abrupt change in velocity, we need infinite acceleration. Similarly for the abrupt change in acceleration infinite force will be required. Obviously infinite acceleration or force both are not possible.

Thus acceleration and velocity cannot change values abruptly at any instant of time. It can also be seen by drawing the acceleration-time and velocity-time graphs.

The assertion is correct, but the given reason is incorrect.
