Islet of Langerhans are clusters of endocrine cells which are scattered around the pancreas. The most common islet cell is, the beta cell, which produces insulin which helps in the regulation of carbohydrate, fat, and protein metabolism whereas the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans produce another opposing hormone glucagon which releases glucose from the liver and fatty acids from the fat tissue. The pancreas contains both exocrine cells that excrete digestive enzymes and endocrine cells that release hormones, hence it is sometimes referred to as heterocrine gland.
