A landslide can be defined as a mass of rock or debris moving down a slope under the direct influence of gravity. Landslides may result due to natural causes (volcanic eruptions) and man-made ones (anthropogenic actions) such as mining activities.
Landslides are caused by various factors as follows :
- Heavy rain alters the pressure within the slope, which leads to slope instability. So the heavy water-laden slope materials (soil, rock) will succumb to the forces of gravity.
- Earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the Earth's crust or volcanic action. For example, in the Himalayas, the tremors (an earthquake of low or moderate intensity) led to landslides.
