Solution

The correct option is C Assertion is true and reason is false
A landslide can be defined as a mass of rock or debris moving down a slope under the direct influence of gravity. Landslides may result due to natural causes (volcanic eruptions) and man-made ones (anthropogenic actions) such as mining activities.

Landslides are caused by various factors as follows :
  • Heavy rain alters the pressure within the slope, which leads to slope instability. So the heavy water-laden slope materials (soil, rock) will succumb to the forces of gravity.
  • Earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the Earth's crust or volcanic action. For example, in the Himalayas, the tremors (an earthquake of low or moderate intensity) led to landslides.
  • Volcanic eruptions in specific regions can also cause landslides.
  • Deforestation adds to landslides because the roots of trees and plants hold the soil. On clearing the vegetation, the mountain slope loses its protective layer due to which the rain water flows with very high speed on the slopes which results in landslides.
  • Landslides often occur in mountain regions while making roads by removing a large number of rocks.
  • Mining operations that involve blasting techniques create vibrations under the soil and lead to landslides.
  • In the regions of North East India, landslides occur because of shifting agriculture (jhum cultivation) as it involves clearing the forest areas.
  • Due to the increasing population and urbanisation (the movement of population into cities and away from rural areas), a large number of houses are being created which leads to the creation of a large amount of debris which can cause landslides.
Thus assertion is true and reason is false.
