Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a gram-negative soil bacterium, which can cause crown gall tumours at wound sites of infected dicotyledonous plants. This bacteria enters plant roots through wounds. Wounds may have been created by planting, grafting, soil insect feeding, root damage from excavation or other forms of physical damage. During the infection, A. tumefaciens can transfer part of its Ti plasmid to the plant cells, which becomes stably integrated into the plant genome and expressed. So the assertion and reason are both correct, but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
