Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and a scientific contemporary of his, Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) jointly proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection in the paper “Origin of Species” in 1858. Although they both worked independently in two different islands,their findings were quite similar. Wallace was a great admirer of Darwin, so after gathering the evidence supporting his proposal for evolution by natural selection he sent it to Darwin, titled “On the tendencies of varieties to depart indefinitely from the original type” in 1858.
Darwin's friends Joseph Dalton Hooker and Charles Lyell advised Darwin to publish it jointly in the paper “Origin of Species".
