Alkali metals can not be prepared by electrolysis of the aqueous solution of their salts since hydrogen is liberated at the cathode instead of the alkali metal because the discharge potentials of alkali metals are much higher than that of the hydrogen. (or Reduction potentials of alkali metal cations is much lower than that of H+)
Reaction at cathode:

2H+(aq)+2eH2
Reaction at anode:

2Cl(aq)Cl2+2e
