Assertion :Alkyl halides are colourless when pure. Reason: Bromides and Iodides develop colour when exposed to light.
Purealkyl halides are colorless. Bromides and iodides have lower bond dissociation energy as compared to fluoride and iodide which break down them into ions. This low enthalpy means that even at normal temperature or on exposure to sunlight, iodides and bromides decompose and form free iodine and bromine, both of which are colored and hence impart color to the original halides.
