The group 1 chlorides cannot be distinguished by their colours but can be differentiated from their solubility as PbCl2 is soluble in hot water hence can be differentiated; and for another two cations NH3 can be used to differentiate. AgCl forms a complex with ammonia [Ag(NH3)2]+ and HgCl2 gives a black ppt. forming chloro-mercuric-amide.
