Amino acids found in the human body are always α-amino acids because, in an amino acid carbon, its four attached groups are - COOH, - NH2, -H and a variable -R group. thus according to the nomenclature of organic compounds, we find that -COOH will be given preference thus numbering of compound starts from there and after that - the NH2 group is attached on α carbon of the amino acid so called as alpha-amino acid.
