Electromagnetic induction states that when magnetic flux linked with a coil is changed, an emf is induced in the coil which is called induced emf.AC generator uses the same principle of electromagnetic induction. In an AC generator a coil is rotated in presence of a constant magnetic field, this changes the magnetic flux linked to it and an emf is induced which in turn produces a periodically changing current called alternating current.
And the AC is called alternating current because it changes direction periodically.
