Question

Assertion: ATPase enzyme has two parts; one called the F1 is embedded in the membrane of thylakoid and forms a transmembrane channel that carries out facilitated diffusion of proton across the membrane.

Reason: The other portion is called F0 and protrudes on the thylakoid membrane on the side that faces stroma.

Solution

The correct option is A If both assertion and reason are false.
Assertion-Reason relation

The ATP synthase (ATPase) is a transmembrane enzyme that extends across the thylakoid membrane. It has two parts- F0 and F1.
  • The F0 provides a channel for the protons to diffuse across the membrane. This facilitated diffusion happens due to the proton gradient created across the membrane.
Assertion-Reason relation
  • The F1 is the part of ATP synthase that protrudes towards the stroma on the thylakoid membrane. It uses up the energy from the breakdown of proton gradient and synthesises ATP.

So, both assertion and reason are incorrect.

Final answer

(D) If both assertion and reason are false.
