In borax bead test, coloured salts are decomposed to give coloured metal metaborates. When borax is heated, glassy bead of boric anhydride is obtained which reacts with basic part of coloured salt to form metaborates having characteristic colour. Thus cupric metaborate is blue in colour and nickel metaborate is brown in colour.
