Question

Assertion :Consider a satellite moving in an elliptical orbit around the earth. As the satellite moves, the work done by the gravitational force of the earth on the satellite for any small part of the orbit is zero. Reason: KE of the satellite in the above described case is not constant as it moves around the earth.

Solution

The correct option is D Assertion is incorrect but Reason is correct
In an elliptical orbit, the gravitational force and the velocity of the satellite are perpendicular to each other only at two extreme positions. In the rest of the positions, they are not perpendicular, and work done =F.ds
Since in elliptical paths, the distance between the bodies increases and decreases periodically, the gravitational potential energy varies and so does the kinetic energy to keep the total energy constant.
