Photosynthesis occurs in two phases: photochemical and biosynthetic photochemical phase is also called light or hill reaction. Biosynthetic phase is also called as dark or Blackman's reaction. Dark reaction catalyses assimilation of $C{O}_2$ to carbohydrates. They occur in stroma or matrix of chloroplasts. These reactions do not require light directly but depend on assimilatory power (ATP and NADPH) produced during light reaction.
