Solution

The correct option is A Assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion
Plants or trees play an important role in balancing the ecosystem and the environment. They take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen during photosynthesis. This process of photosynthesis explains forests are CO2 sinks.

They remove CO2 from the atmosphere by fixing atmospheric CO2 in the chlorophyll and convert it into complex organic molecules (starch). Therefore, they are important carbon pools that continuously exchange CO2 with the atmosphere.

Carbon stored in the living plant biomass consists of wood, leaves, fruits etc. The amount of carbon in the biomass varies between 35 to 65% of the dry weight. At the global level, 19% of carbon in the Earth's biosphere is stored in plants and 81% is stored in the soil.

Therefore, assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.
