In the gaseous state, the internuclear separation is high which results in minimum internuclear forces (attraction or repulsion) between the molecules as they are highly dispersed. Thereby, the ionization potential (IP) and electron affinity (EA) values are a characteristic property of the element and are not affected by other interatomic or intermolecular forces.
