Assertion :Dipole moment of C−Cl bond is more than that of C−F. Reason: Size of F is very small.
Dipole moment, μ is the product of the magnitude of charge accumulated on bond and the distance between the two poles. Thus dipole moments of alkyl halide depend on not only the polarity of the bond but also on the bond length. The greater value of dipole moment for C−Cl in comparison of C−F is due to a cumulative result of polarity and longer bond length of C−Cl compared to C−F.
