The Dumas method has the advantages of being easy to use and automated. It is also considerably faster than the Kjeldahl method, taking a few minutes per measurement, as compared to the hour or more for Kjeldahl. Kjeldahl method is not applicable to compounds containing nitrogen in nitro and azo groups and nitrogen present in rings (e.g. pyridine) as nitrogen of these compounds does not convert to ammonium sulfate under the conditions of this method.
