Assertion
During Rutherford's gold foil experiment, very few α particles deflected back. It's correct that very few alpha particles were deflected back during Rutherford's gold foil experiment.
Reason
The nucleus present inside the atom is heavy. Most of the mass and all the positive charge of an atom is concentrated in the nucleus. But the size of the nucleus is much smaller than the size of an atom. Hence, when alpha particles passed through the empty space, they did not face any obstruction and went undeflected. Very few alpha particles that came close to the nucleus got deflected.
