Solution

The correct option is E Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of assertion.
Assertion:
In the electrolysis of NaCl solution, chlorine is
produced at anode instead of 0. The two

half-cell reactions are:

2C1Cl(g)+2e;E=1.36V

2HOO(g)+4H++4e¯;E=1.23V

Reason:

The lower value of Ecellthis preferred, but due
to overvo tage chlorine is liberated at anode.

Thus, the reason is true!

Hence, both the assertion and the reason are
true, and the reason is the correct explanation
for the assertion.

So, option (A) is the correct answer
