Question

Assertion :FeCl3 can be reduced to FeCl2 by SnCl2 as well as by the addition of Sn into it. Reason: This reaction is possible since Sn4+ is more stable than Sn2+ (inert-pair effect)Also, FeCl3 solution is acidic due to hydrolysis. Sn added reacts with HCl forming nascent hydrogen that can reduce FeCl3 to FeCl2

A

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
2FeCl3+SnCl2SnCl4+2FeCl2
This reaction is possible since Sn4+ is more stable than Sn2+ (inert-pair effect)

Also, FeCl3 solution is acidic due to hydrolysis:

FeCl3+3H2OFe(OH)3+3HCl

Sn added reacts with HCl forming nascent hydrogen that can reduce FeCl3 to FeCl2:

2HCl+SnSnCl2+2H(nascent)

FeCl3+HFeCl2+HCl

So Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
Hence option A is correct.
