Three successive mitotic divisions in functional megaspore form eight nuclei. The antipodal and chalazal nuclei undergo cytokinesis but the central cell with two polar nuclei does not undergo cytokinesis. This produces female gametophyte with eight nuclei (two polar nuclei, two synergids, one egg cell and three antipodal). Double fertilisation is characteristic of angiosperms and includes syngamy and triple fusion. Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion.
