Rheostat is also a variable resistor, they are able to vary the resistance in a circuit without any interception and is used to control current.It is similar to potentiometer.It uses only two terminals even when three terminals are present as in a potentiometer. The one end is made of the resistive element and other end of the terminal to the sliding contact.So both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion as potentiometer is used as voltage divider but not to control current .
