Question

Assertion :For the Daniell cell, Zn|Zn2+||Cu2+|Cu with Ecell=1.1 volt, the application of opposite potential greater than 1.1 V results into flow of electrons from cathode to anode. Reason: Zn is deposited at anode and Cu is dissolved at cathode.

Solution

The correct option is B Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not the correct explanation for Assertion
The application of the opposite potentail greater than 1.1V, the cell reaction will get reversed and anode become cathode and cathode becomes anode;
so, electrons starts flowing from higher potential to lower potential i.e., from cathode to anode;
and as a result of this Zn is deposited at anode and Cu is dissolved at cathode.
