When one oxygen binds with one unit in the hemoglobin, it stimulates binding of other units. This positive cooperative binding is achieved through steric conformational changes of the hemoglobin protein complex; i.e., when one sub unit protein in hemoglobin becomes oxygenated, a conformational or structural change in the whole complex is initiated, causing the other sub units to gain an increased affinity for oxygen. The binding of oxygen with Hb is thus, a cooperative process. But in a haemoglobin molecule, one atom of iron carry one molecule of oxygen or two atoms.
