At rest, there is a high concentration of K+ and proteins inside while there is a high Na+ concentration outside. This creates a negative charge inside and a positive charge outside.
  • The unequal distribution of Na+ and K+ is maintained by utilizing chemical energy in the form of ATP. It involves the operation of Na+-K+ pump which is present in the plasma membrane. This pump uses ATP to pump sodium out of cells while pumping potassium into cells, both against their concentration gradients.
