Alkaline KMnO4 is known as Baeyer's reagent. When alkene reacts with dil. alkaline KMnO4, glycol (dihydroxy) compunds are formed; as in this process we get saturated product from unsaturated reactant. So hybridization of ethene carbon changes from sp2tosp3.
