Answer:-
Assertion The hybridization state of carbon in carbon dioxide is sp. Two sp hybridized orbitals of carbon atom overlap with two p-orbitals of oxygen atom to form 2σ bond while other two electrons of carbon are involved in pπpπ bonding with oxygen atom.
Reason :¨O=C=¨O:
The C-O bonds in carbon dioxide are polar and yet the dipole moment is zero because the 2 bond dipoles cancel each other. Since the ends are same, the electron pulls same for both oxygen atoms and hence, there is no dipole moment.
