Question

Assertion: In eukaryotes, replication and transcription occur in the nucleus but translation takes place in the cytoplasm.

Reason: Pre-processed mRNAs are transferred from the nucleus to the cytoplasm where they get processed and then translated by the ribosomes in the cytoplasm.

Solution

The correct option is C Assertion is true but the reason is false
In the distinctly distributed cell compartments of a cell, different activities get executed. The nucleus contains genetic material. The genetic material is the hereditary material in the cell that carries information specific to an organism.

The genetic material duplicates itself by the process of replication. Replication is a unique process of making identical copies of the existing DNA by using them as the template inside the nucleus.

The process of making a copy of genetic information stored in the DNA into a complementary strand of RNA is called transcription. Transcription in eukaryotes occurs within the nucleus. The mRNA is processed from the primary mRNA transcript in the nucleus by the process of maturation. At the 5’ end, a cap and a tail of poly-A at the 3’ end are added and the mRNA is spliced on the basis of introns and exons. Non-coding introns are removed and the coding exons are ligated.

Mature mRNA is then exported to the cytoplasm, where the process of translation i.e., converting of mRNA into polypeptide/protein occurs with the help of ribosomes.
