Glucose is metabolized by the glycolysis and through the hexose monophosphate (HMP) shunt. Glycolysis catabolizes glucose to pyruvate. HMP shunt catabolizes glucose to ribose-5-phosphate. In mature cells, glycolysis replaces HMP shunt. These cells obtain energy from glucose majorly by anaerobic glycolysis. This is because glycolysis is a fast process which can feed mitochondria with raw material. It is used for quick energy.
