The proximal tubule regulates the pH of the filtrate by exchanging hydrogen ions in the interstitium for bicarbonate ions in the filtrate. It also secretes organic acids, such as creatinine and other bases, into the filtrate. This makes the glomerular filtrate isotonic to blood plasma not hypertonic. About 85 to 90% of the filtered bicarbonate is reabsorbed in the proximal tubule and the rest is reabsorbed in the distal tubule and collecting ducts.
