Caecum is the small dead end of large intestine which, in the plant eating animals such as rabbits, harbors mutualistic bacteria. These bacteria help the herbivores to digest the cellulose. Since the nutrients are already absorbed in small intestine therefore, the nutrients produced as byproducts of bacterial fermentation of cellulose in large intestine are first lost as faeces but coprophagy (feeding own’s faeces) returns the nutrients lost to the animal. Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect. Correct answer is C.
