In Rutherfourd's α-particle scattering experiment most of the particles pass undeflected and very few are strongly deflected by nearly 180 degree. This led to the conclusion that most of the space in atom is empty and positive charge is concentrated in much smaller area called nucleus. This cause high repulsion to the positively charged α-particles.
