1) Ammonia has very pungent irritating smell which is highly distinct and can be distinguished from choking smell of hydrochloric acid.
2) Identification can be done by bringing a rod dipped in ammonium hydroxide near the flask filled of gas. White fumes of ammonium chloride is formed which shows it is HCl and not ammonia gas.
