Question

Assertion :It is difficult to distinguish the strengths of the strong acids such as HCl, H2SO4,HNO3 HBr, HI or HClO4 in dilute aqueous solutions. Reason: In dilute aqueous solution all strong acids donate a proton to water and are essentially 100% ionised to produce a solution containing H3O+ ions plus the anions of strong acid.

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion
In dilute aqueous solution, all strong acids are completely dissociated. They donate their proton to a water molecule to form H3O+ ion. Thus their strength is reduced to that of H3O+ ion. Thus it is difficult to distinguish their strengths in dilute aqueous solution.
