Solution

The correct option is B Assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation for the assertion
Slash and burn agriculture (Jhum cultivation), is a process of cutting down the vegetation in a particular area, setting fire in that remaining foliage (to produce ash) and clearing the area for growing crops.

In this method the land cleared is used for some time and then left alone for a longer period so that vegetation can grow again. Cultivation on the land is carried for a few years until the fertility is reduced and such lands are left alone or uncultivated up to 10 years to allow wild vegetation to grow on land and to allow land to gain its fertility.

Slash and burn agriculture contributes to deforestation due to the following reasons :
  • As the population has increased, the lands can not be left uncultivated for years. So, the recovery time given to land to regain its nutrients and moisture has reduced to a significant level.
  • Recovery is very slow due to repeated cultivation.
  • Fires intentionally set can unintentionally spread throughout the forest. When fire spreads to unintended areas, the protective forest canopy is destroyed. The resulting sun exposure to the forest floor intensifies the existing fire.
  • Soil erosion, landslides and dust clouds (due to burning) also leads to deforestation. As without trees and their root systems, soil washes away during heavy rains.
Therefore, assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
