The mast cell is a type of white blood cell that contains many granules rich in histamine and heparin. They play an important role in allergy and anaphylaxis. The production of allergens (which cause allergy) stimulates the release of IgE (immunoglobulin E) antibodies. These IgE antibodies bind to the allergens and then activates receptors of mast cells which triggers the release of inflammatory chemicals such as histamine.
