Question

Assertion :Methanol cannot be prepared by the hydration of an alkene. Reason: Hydration of alkenes is electrophilic addition reaction. Alkenes when treated with dil. sulfuric acid form alcohol by Markonikov's rule and the protonation gives more stable carbocation and the minimum number carbons required is two.

Solution

The correct option is A Both Assertion and Reason are correct and Reason is the correct explanation for Assertion.
During hydration of alkene, H atom is attached one unsaturated C atom and OH group is attached another unsaturated C atom. Thus we need at least two C atoms in an alkene. But methanol (CH3OH) has only one C atom. Hence, methanol cannot be prepared by the hydration of an alkene.
Note: Hydration of ethylene to form ethanol is shown below.
CH2=CH2H2O/H2SO4−−−−−−−CH3CH2OH.
